Post 8: English Language Challenges

I think the blog became something that I enjoyed doing. Many times it was like "oh, I have to do the blog" but when I sat down to think about the words that I was going to use, I felt that I was learning about the freedom of being able to express things that I really liked.

When I read in English I am able to differentiate most of the ideas, it is very intuitive for me to recognize verb tenses and grammar rules, but when I listen to people speak in English I am quite unable to recognize the thread of ideas. When I have to write I need to help myself a little vocabulary, and when I speak in English I also feel that lack of vocabulary but I am also very capable of making my ideas understood. Maybe I would like to improve listening, which is a fundamental part of learning a language.

With my friends we watch generally English-speaking series and we like to play talking like in the series, and imitate their accents and words. I think it is a great exercise to practice English in everyday ways. There are also things that I feel are better defined in English than in Spanish, words, feelings, ideas, which in Spanish do not have the same connotation as in English. I like to learn those words.

Post 7: Changes to your Study Program

This is an especially important topic for those of us who study the arts. In my case, studying Theater Acting, I think the career needs many better ones with respect to the educational approach.

There should be a subject per semester called free creation, where one can create scenes, performance, works of his own authorship and without such a clear guide to how things should be done, that is what other subject would be for. I believe that the space for experimentation and creation of works and projects is very important because that is how our work will be.

Professors who only dedicate themselves to teaching should not make classes, they must necessarily be people who are actively creating art, otherwise it may happen that the ideas of these professors become old and outdated, and do not dialogue with the contemporary artistic field.

The issue of infrastructure is especially delicate in our case... The facilities of the Theater Department of the University of Chile are a disgrace! The class rooms are tiny and do not have lights or stereo, the floor is a mess and in winters they are a freezer. Not to mention the leaks that occur when there is rain. A partner once had an electric shock in the class room!

The way of teaching should change as well. Everything should be more horizontal and appealing to the creativity of the students, teachers often take on the role of theater directors a lot and that does not contribute anything to learning how to create a play, it only makes you an interpreter.

Post 6: Time travel to the future

Uf… really talking about how I envision the future in this context is very challenging.

When I was little I loved time travel movies and this topic in general, I made drawings of time machines, I liked to imagine that I could get to know the world in other possible ways, I dreamed of seeing flying cars and all kinds of machines that would make us think. easier life. Today, while I still think it is a fascinating subject, I think I have lost hope for the future.

I wish I could travel to the future to see that we have changed for the better. I don't care if we don't have flying cars, I wish there were no cars. I know maybe what I say is a bit hippie but I think I would like to live in a more relaxed world, in communion with nature.

If I traveled to the future and found a beautiful world, I don't know if I would stay. On the one hand I would like to enjoy that peace but on the other I would feel guilty that I am not doing anything for that future to exist.

Post 5: My future job

As I am in my last year of university, it has become a recurring concern what will that job be that supports me financially while making me happy, being an artist in Chile can be very difficult.

My perfect job would be many indeed, I imagine myself working in a cultural center, either managing or doing classes. Teaching is also an area that I would like to develop, I would like to be a theater teacher in schools, open free workshops in neighborhood venues in the summers, I imagine that this must be very rewarding.

My career is Theater Acting, and although I have never developed the artistic field very well in my career, it is something that I would like to do in the future, either acting in a play or film or directing. In general I think that I see my future work in very different ways, I think it will not be easy but I also have hope that doing what I like to do I will be happy.

Post 4: A person I would like to meet

I am about to graduate as an actor and I also consider myself an informal musician, therefore I love music and cinema (and series), and recently there is a person who appears to me in both: Donald Glover.

Donald is a 38-year-old American comedian, he is also a director, screenwriter, rapper, musician and producer. He became known for acting on the sitcom Community (which is my favorite series right now) and for creating and performing in Atlanta, a Netflix series about rap and music.

At the same time, Donald created an alter ego to launch his musical career: Childish Gambino. The idea of creating a character to separate his musical career from his acting career seems great to me! It is something I would like to do because it makes it more fun and infinite artistic worlds can be created.

I think that although I like his performances in the series I have whatched, his music captivates me a lot, making rap that goes beyond what I was used to listen. His musical productions are very beautiful and they manage to convey many sensations in the same album. I think his versatility as an actor helps him to generate a proposal that goes from music, visuality, performance, musical production, show and storytelling. He is a really complete artist!

Sometimes I think I would like to perform with him in a show and that he invites me to collaborate on one of his songs. He transmits a very sensitive and friendly attitude, I think we could get along well jeje.

Donald (and Childish) has won awards both as an actor and as a musician. In 2017 his performance and his direction in Atlanta made him the winner of two Emmy Awards, that same year he was nominated for the Grammy Awards in various categories for his album "Awaken, my love", finally winning the award for Best Traditional R&B Recording.

Post 3: A day to remember.

It was a day like any other day at my place in downtown.

With my friend Seba, we went out to get some French fries. All of the sudden, while we were walking down the street we saw the cutest cat that I have ever seen in my whole life: it was white and black, and it seemed he was the same age as “the cat” (our pet) He looked hungry and poorly looked after.

Still, he to approached me and began to caress me, at that very moment I knew that he wanted me to be his friend, and that we could give each other’s company, love and friendship. So, we made the decision to adopt him and that I would be his tutor.

That made me feel so happy. Sadly, my happiness was interrupted when a man told me that the cat had an owner who worked in the restaurant across the street. I was not sure about what the man said, because the cat was badly cared, so because of that I thought that his owners would not take care of him. Anyway, I decided to go and ask the man, and although they told me that the cat was from there, I wasn’t confident enough and I thought it was best to adopt it, so I told the owner: "I'll take the cat" and I went out with him, nobody told me anything and since that day he's my kitten Suko.

Post 2: The Best Concert.

My best concert was for the 50-year-anniversary of Congreso, a Chilean band of rock fusion!

It was in August 2019 at the Caupolicán Theater and it was quite an event! Some friends from Concepción came to Santiago, where I lived, and we went to see Congreso forming a group of 7 people. The concert lasted almost 4 hours! It was spectacular. In between there was a live parade, a puppet show, a light show and much more. As the band's 50 years were being celebrated, they invited to the stage different members that the group has had over the years, so we could see the Congreso of the 60s and the 80s, where the special guest was the Chilean musician Joe Vasconcelos. It was a concert full of emotion and really beautiful, as I enjoyed the company of friends who I love and a first-class show.
